In 2014 High School Nation added Palmer High School to its annual tour. After nearly six months of work, contracts were finalized, the ability to accept donations was approved, security was put in place, schedules were created, and the big day finally came. All students in the school came down to our athletic field and had the opportunity to interact with musical artists, musical equipment, higher education institutions, artist booths, and experience a concert/festival focused on opening their eyes toward possibilities in the music and arts industries.
The video above was shot and edited by the Colorado Springs School District 11 Media Services department to highlight some of the experiences about the day and some of the additional opportunities students in career and technical education, journalism, broadcast video, theater, and student council were able to experience behind the scenes.
From a teacher’s perspective getting this event arranged was very challenging initially. Over the course of the project I had the chance and requirement to work with our contracting department, risk management office, volunteer services, visual and performing arts department, district security, learning resource services, the Colorado Springs Fire Department, the Colorado Springs Police Department, and all of our school administrative/facilities/business/security/teaching staff. The outcome was a great experience for a wide variety of students and staff, resulting in the video you see above.
