When I was a kid I knew that the computer was something that I would one day be able to control with the wave of a hand. Imagine my discouragement when I had to use the mouse and the keyboard instead of my bare hands.
Fast forward fifteen years and I not only can control the computer with a wave of the hand, but my students are the ones making that happen. In February of 2017 I went to a few of my students and said, “Hey, we have this thing called a Leap Motion controller. See if you can download the API and just make it work with your Roll a Ball game in order to make your game board respond to your hand.” A few years ago I wouldn’t even have known what that meant myself, but my students jumped on board and using a script someone else wrote they adapted their game to operate with the Leap.
The first rounds weren’t flawless as is evidenced by the, “What the hell happened? Why is it doing that?!? moment in this video:
Eventually they got it figured out and they created a program that follows your hand motion to create a game where your hands are the controller. Challenge Accepted.
